Once done with the program, participants must pass the Massage and Body Works Licensing Exam to be certified in South Dakota. “I found it was the perfect job for me,” she said. When she was six months into the program, Olawa said she was working on an elderly woman and was able to provide pain relief the woman had been dealing with for a decade. “I can’t tell you the fulfillment that comes from a massage career,” Olawa said. The sisters’ massage school is based on a program developed by their mother in 2001. “Mom had to twist my arm to get (me) into the class,” Olawa said, noting she initially had doubts about massage therapy as a career and wondered if her hands would be strong enough.īut, she said, the equipment and techniques taught help provide the tools needed to provide massage for long periods of time. Mele-Ann was certified first in 2000 with Olawa gaining her certification in 2007 after first going to school for business. That’s in the Briscoe Building at 224 First Ave. She said there could be 10 or more students in the Aberdeen class, which will be at Fit & Fire Lean Body Barre Studio. “We are really excited about doing this in Aberdeen,” Olawa said. While the registration deadline has passed for the 2023 summer session, Olawa said there will be another class in Aberdeen beginning in fall 2024. Olawa and Mele-Ann were in town recently for an open house during which they discussed their 10-month massage program and their plans for Aberdeen.
